1820s Antique Sterling Silver Half Pint Tankard
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George IV sterling silver half pint tankard, part of our wine and drink related silverware collection.
This exceptional antique George IV sterling silver half pint tankard has a cylindrical shaped form onto a spreading collet style foot.
The body of this small silver tankard is encircled with two fine and impressive broad bands of tooled decoration, in addition to an applied moulded border to the rim.
The antique silver tankard retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover encircled with further bands of tooled decoration, this unusual flanking hinge is an impressive example of engineering for the period and indicates the high quality of the piece.
The cover is surmounted with an impressive thumbpiece modelled in the form of a scallop shell.
The tankard is fitted with an impressive plain faceted angular handle with an incurved thumbpiece.
Such small antique tankards are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
Condition
This small silver tankard is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface and to the interior of the cover are very clear, the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver. The makers mark to the surface has wear due to age and location.
