Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Locking Double Cover Tea Caddy

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver locking double cover tea caddy; an addition to our silver teaware collection. This exceptional antique George III sterling silver locking tea caddy has a plain rounded rectangular form with incurved corners. The surface of this caddy is plain and embellished to the lower portion of each side with fluted decoration. This antique Georgian tea caddy is fitted with two opposing hallmarked flush hinged covers; the flush hinge indicates the fine quality of this piece. The caddy has an impressive angular thread decorated handle with incurved corners and accented with bifurcating leaf decorated terminals to either side. The caddy retains the original fitted fully working locks and the original key. Double covered caddies are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition This Georgian tea caddy is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the body and part hallmarks to the interior of each cover are all very clear. Dimensions Length 13.7cm/5.4", Width 10.2cm/4", Height to top of handle 18.5cm/7.3". Weight 19.3 troy ounces/599g (including locking mechanism). Maker: John Robins. Origin: London, England. The further four segments bear Chinoiserie bright cut engraved Chinese symbols representing the four seasons: spring (? / chun), summer (? / xia), autumn (? / qiu) and winter (? / dong). This antique silver tea caddy retains the original hallmarked flush hinged cover; the flush hinge indicates the fine quality of this piece. The body of this silver tea caddy box is embellished with bands of bright cut engraved volute spiraling leaf ornamentation on a matte background to the upper and lower portions; these bands flank a plain undulating bordered panel. The ornamentation to the surface of the caddy alternates with panels of concave vertical fluted decoration.
