Antique Victorian Silver Punch Bowl Frederick Elkington 1884 19th C

This is a large gorgeous antique Victorian sterling silver punch bowl bearing the makers mark of the renowned silversmith Walter Barnard with hallmarks forLondon 1892 and retailed by Gibson & Co, Belfast. This exquisite punch bowl is also ideal as a champagne cooler and it has beautiful and incredibly detailed embossed half fluted decoration and is raised on a pedestal foot. It bears a fabulous heraldic crest for the Sharman-Crawford family with the latin motto "Durum Patientia Frango" which translates to "By patience I break what is hard" The SHARMAN-CRAWFORD combined Coat of Arms Born at Moira Castle, at the age of 25 on 5 December 1805, as William SHARMAN, he married at Bangor, Mabel Fridiswid CRAWFORD and had with her eleven children. They lived together at Crawford House, Crawford's Burn, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Just before his death in 1827, William's brother-in-law Arthur Crawford in a pact with his father, agreed to break the entail on the estate in favour of his sister Mabel Fridiswid CRAWFORD, and William SHARMAN was authorised, by Royal Licence to assume the surname of CRAWFORD in addition to, and after SHARMAN, and to bear the arms of Crawford quarterly with those of Sharman, thus beginning the SHARMAN-CRAWFORD line. A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver vase with military interest (Durham Light Infantry); an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver vase has a tapering cylindrical form to a domed circular spreading foot. The upper and lower portions of the body of the vase are embellished with embossed and chased stylized scrolling leaf and bead decoration in a swirl design. The body is further ornamented with a band of six cartouches amidst a shaped border accented with a leaf motif between each; four of the cartouches remain vacant. To one side there is a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of the Durham Light Infantry amidst the inscription ‘Presented to Officers, 3rd Bn, The Durham Light Infantry’, with the presentation inscription ‘Officers Race, won by, Lieut H J Sowerby, 1887’ to the other side. The upper rim of this impressive vase is encircled with an applied moulded border to the rim. The vase retains the original gilt interior. In 1758 General John Lambton of County Durham first raised the 68th Regiment of Foot as part of the British Army. An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jugs made by Elkington & Co; an addition to our Victorian silverware collection These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver jugs have a tapering ovoid body onto a circular domed foot, in a Classic ewer style. The waisted neck of the each jug is embellished with a bright cut engraved undulating band of stylised leaf decoration flanked by plain applied ornamentations in addition to a broad band of scroll and simplified Akroter designs. Each jug is ornamented with individual fine and impressive female Grecian style figures, the first bearing a vine terminating staff and holding out a handled bowl, another passive character featuring long braids in her hair and holding her skirt in one hand and a tied bundle of wheat in the other and the third holding in both hands grapes with flowing garments intertwining her body. The lower portion of each body is encircled with a band of lobed decoration incorporating a circular motif to each alternating terminal, all filled with a matte pattern. These antique silver jugs are fitted with hallmarked domed hinged covers surmounted with an impressive scrolling lobed thumbpiece and featuring an imposing scrolling hinge.
