Arthur Stone Sterling Silver Arts & Crafts Hammered Kettle on Stand

About the Item

Arthur Stone, hand hammered sterling silver kettle on stand with burner in Arts & Crafts style from the early 20th century. This extremely elegant ensemble exhibits the attention to geometric, curvilinear design typical of the Arts & Crafts movement. The kettle measures 8 7/8'' in height by 8 1/2'' from handle to spout by 6 1/4'' in depth. The stand measures 6 2/3'' in height and stands on a square base measuring 5 3/4'' in length. Total height of the kettle on the stand is 12 7/8''. Total weight is 59.3 troy ounces, and each piece bears hallmarks as shown, with the kettle having additionally a dedicatory inscription to Eleanor Thomas Baker. Arthur J. Stone (1847–1938), a leading American silversmith, was born, trained and worked in Sheffield, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland, before travelling to the United States in 1884. He was one of the last silversmiths in America to train apprentices to carry out designs in hand-wrought silver. In 1901, Stone set up a workshop in Gardner, Massachusetts which operated under his name until its sale in 1937. His work is in the collection of major museums, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where his pieces are on permanent display as well as the MFA in Boston. His work was also the subject of a special exhibition at the Boston Athenaeum in 1994. Please feel free to ask us with any questions, and please see our other listings. We hand polish all items before shipping them out, but if there is interest for a professional polishing and/or engraving removal, we can take care of that for an additional charge and with delayed shipping.
