Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Tazza Compote 263B, Grape Motif

About the Item

Vintage Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza compote with grape motif. This fabulous Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza features Jensen's iconic grape motif, a celebrated range of pieces which were inspired by the Art Nouveau aesthetic coupled with time the artist spent traveling in Italy. Georg Jensen was born in 1866 and trained as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1892. Jensen began his artistic career in ceramics and started working with silver in 1904. He went on to establish his own smithy in Copenhagen and like many others working during the Art Nouveau period, was strongly influenced by natural forms and structure found in flowers and plants. As mentioned above, Jensen spent time in Italy shortly after the turn of the century and developed an appreciation for ancient Roman silver work. He was also struck by the work of more recent Italian artists and was particularly influenced by those pieces which drew upon classical mythology, such as Baroque painter Caravaggio's 'Bacchus'. Jensen combined these influences with emerging Art Nouveau organic motifs, leading him to utilize the malleable qualities of silver to create his renowned Grape Collection. This form of this silver tazza was initially designed by Jensen in 1918. The piece has a round pedestal foot which rises to a thick columnar stem reminiscent of the twisting trunk of a grape plant. The stem transitions to a series of circular grape-like shapes where it joins the bowl of the tazza. The lower portion of the bowl repeats the grape theme and is decorated with a series of applied grape bunches set along an undulating silver vine. The tazza's wide shallow bowl has a smooth hand-hammered finish which provides a visual contrast with the dimensional design found on the rest of the piece. The tazza is in excellent condition and does not have any dents. As a vintage item, the dish does show signs of light use, namely some light scratching and areas of tarnish which I have not attempted to remove. The tazza stands 7.625" tall as measured to the top edge of the bowl, which is 7.125" across the mouth. The pedestal foot is 3.875" in diameter and is fully hallmarked with the oval raised dot "Georg Jensen" mark as well as the words "DENMARK" and "STERLING". The piece is also marked with the designation "925.S" and impressed design number "263" and size "B". The piece weighs in at 1 lb 3 oz or 17.8 OZT. This gorgeous grape motif tazza displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of fine Georg Jensen pieces. A fantastic example of early Jensen silver in an iconic form.
