"Harvesting Coffee, " Remarkable, Unique Sterling Silver Jar, Castillo for Nestlé

About the Item

A remarkable piece of sterling silver artistry and commercial history, this pierced silver container was commissioned by the Nestlé company to mark a visit by its Board of Directors to Mexico in 1988. Nestlé has had a major presence in Mexico for decades, with two coffee plants and over a dozen production facilities, so this commemorative piece celebrates an important moment in the company's history. Each side depicts a scene in the harvesting process, with native figures shown collecting the beans in woven baskets tied to their heads. The container was expressly designed to contain a glass jar of Nescafé instant coffee, and it includes an expanatory booklet and a matching silver spoon. The piece was handcrafted by the famed Los Castillo shop in Taxco, founded by Antonio Castillo, who became a master silversmith under the tutelage of William Spratling, the pioneering American silversmith who settled in Taxco in 1929. Castillo left in 1939 with his brothers to establish their own successful workshop, Los Castillo, on the Plazuela Bernal.
