Large Silver Jardinière, With Original Glass, Koch & Bergfeld, Germany, ca. 1890

About the Item

Large festive silver jardinière over oval ground plan, standing on four flared feet with volute decoration and foliate overlays, the body of the vessel bordered on the upper and lower rims by surrounding bands with chased bar decoration, in the central zone vertical band with finely chased feather leaf decoration and applied plastic mascarons, front and back centered by a large oval domed panel surrounded by small sculpted volutes, side handles in the form of attached sculpted volute pairs with feather leaf overlays and chased side leaf tendrils, connected by an elaborately decorated bridge with beaded rings. Original matching glass insert, lower domed wall satin-finished on the outside with oval lenticular cut, large cut bottom star and stonel cut decoration on the upper flared serrated rim. Total dimensions: height: 15.5 cm / 6.10 in width: 48.0 cm / 18.89 in depth: 31.5 cm / 12.40 in Hallmarks: Stemmed glass - for Koch & Bergfeld Bremen, Germany Founded in 1856 by Gottfried Koch and his brother-in-law Ludwig Bergfeld, in the middle of the 19th century conversion from individual to mechanical series production with stock management, sales from catalogues, 1989 sale of the family business to Villeroy & Boch, outsourcing of departments and resale, cutlery department still exists as Koch & Bergfeld Besteckmanufaktur GmbH. 930 - silver fineness F 6772 - model number crowned 'V' in coat of arms - Dutch import mark 1814-1893 Condition: very well maintained, silver cleaned and polished, original glass undamaged.
