About the Item
Sterling Silver LARGE, REPOUSSE, LIGHTHOUSE SUGAR CASTOR
made by Horace Woodward & Co., Hatton Garden, London.
His mark - H over W & Co over Ld, is stamped on the side of the lid and on the underside of the base.
There are also, a full set of hallmarks, alongside the maker`s mark, that has been applied by the London Assay Office.
Lion - English guarantee mark for sterling silver
C - Date letter for London 1898
Leopard`s Head - Mark of the London Assay Office.
A most beautiful sugar castor - decorated all over with flowers - tulips, daisies and much larger sun flowers.
On the top of the lid is an octagonal cartouche, monogrammed - M
The lid is screwed to the base - a deep, strong thread, with no slack movement - it will never come off accidentally.
The tower base is mounted on a shallow, stepped, circular base, and is gilded a delightful pale gold colour on the inside to prevent reaction between the silver and sugar.
A really fantastic piece - absolutely the best, and in superb, unused condition.
