Antique Charles II English Sterling Silver Tankard, 1670

About the Item

This is a wonderful antique silver Charles II lidded tankard with hall marks for London 1670, the makers mark T.R over a rosette and the Coat of Arms of the Borough of Kingston and Hull. The tankard is of cylindrical form with moulded foot, the stepped lid has a scalloped peak, an S shaped handle engraved with the initials S W and a decorative cast thumb piece. The tankard bears an impressive coats of arms which I have had researched: The Arms of the Borough of Kingston upon Hull in the County of Yorkshire. The arms as engraved upon this Charles II English Sterling Silver Lidded Tankard by T.K. (above a rosette) hallmarked London 1670 are those of ancient Borough of Kingston upon Hull in the County of Yorkshire. These arms may be blazoned as follows: Arms: Azure three ducal coronets in pale or Although these arms were used by the ancient Borough of Kingston upon Hull (commonly called Hull) since the early 15th Century they were not confirmed by The College of Arms until the Heralds’ Visitation of the County of Yorkshire took place in 1665. The three ducal coronets (they were anciently termed crowns) are said to represent it has also been thought that they represent the Three Kings in the Nativity story. They travelled from the East to bring gifts to Jesus, just as merchants travelled to Hull from a different part of the East bringing timber and goods from the Baltic. The shrine of the Three Kings is at Cologne, with which city there were trading connections in the medieval period. The most likely explanation is that the Three Crowns represent the Holy Trinity. In the middle ages, the Holy Trinity – God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit - was a popular religious cult in Hull, and Holy Trinity Church and Trinity House commemorate this. Undoubtedly, this tankard was at one-time part of the civic plate belonging to the Corporation of the Borough of Kingston upon Hull. The initials ‘S.W.’ engraved on its handle may very be the initials of the benefactor who gave this tankard to the Corporation. So saying, there is an outside possibility that the initial ‘S’ represents the surname of the benefactor and the initial ‘W’ represents his Christian name. If so, there are two candidates as the benefactor who were members of the Corporation of the Borough of Kingston upon Hull around the time of the tankard’s manufacture and its presentation. They were William Skinner and William Shires who both served as Mayor in the years 1664 and 1675 respectively. It would be a treasured piece for any discerning collector, and is sure to make an outstanding contribution to your collection. Condition: In excellent condition with clear hallmarks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation.
