Pierre DuMont Art Deco Pewter Tea Coffee Set, 4 Pieces

About the Item

Elegant polished pewter tea or coffee set of 4 pieces by Pierre-Lucien DuMont, France. Set is build with coffee or teapot, sugar pot with lid, creamer and round box. Modernist rounded shape with slight hammered pattern and embossed stylized flower on lids. Handles in hand-carved mahogany wood. Each piece is marked underside "Du Mont". Measurements: Tea/coffee pot 9.44 in. wide (24 cm) x 5.13 in. deep (13 cm) x 6.32 in. high (16 cm). Creamer 4.32 in. wide (11 cm) x 3.13 in. deep (8 cm) x 3.57 in. high (9 cm). Sugar pot 4.75 in. diameter (12 cm) x 4.75 in. high (12 cm). Box 3.38 in. diameter (8.5 cm) x 1.38 in. high (3.5 cm). (measurements in item detail are for the teapot only). About the designer: Pierre-Lucien Du Mont (or Dumont) (France, 20th century) has a solid reputation of pewter art reformer equal to Maurice Daurat. In 1920, Du Mont exhibited for the first time in the Salon d'Automne in Paris and the same year The Galliera Museum bought two pewter pieces from him. Du Mont produced original designs and was noteworthy as an independent artist specialized in the unconventional technique of pewter-ware. He can be compared to Pierre Plasait or Rene Delavan for the quality of his creations and technique. He was a real artist and liked to work pewter in a precious way. Du Mont liked patterns with soft lines, "guilloches" (guilloching), small dots or light hammering. His round shapes are extremely feminine and differ from his colleagues. He also worked with precious metal like gold and silver but pewter remains his favorite material for tableware accessories. From 1921-1934, he regularly participated in the Societe des Artistes Decorateurs exhibitions. In 1928, in The Salon d'Automne, he exhibited tableware with great graphic design. His search for extremely "pure" lines goes up to the point to replace his signature of "DU MONT" by a very stylized signature inspired by the Mesopotamian cuneiform scripture.
