Samuel Alcock Porcelain Coffee Cup, Orange Imari Flowers, Rococo Revival ca 1830
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful coffee cup and saucer made by Samuel Alcock around 1830, which was the Rococo Revival era. The set is decorated with a bold Imari pattern and has a "ring-moulded" shape. Samuel Alcock was one of the many potters in Staffordshire such as Spode, Coalport, H&R Daniel and many others during the 1830s and 1840s. He was perhaps not the most well-known of potters but produced very high quality wares and original designs, often standing out for their bright choice of colours and beautiful shapes. The Alcock factory is not well documented so although they had a huge output, items are often mis-identified and we don't know much about the production process of artists, even though the wares have a very high quality that equals that of the more well known factories. The Rococo style was originally a style of the 18th Century. After the Baroque style, which was highly symmetrical and well-designed as it aimed to express the perfection of God, the Rococo style was a reaction that expressed the unpredictability and flow of nature. "Rococo" is derived from the French word "rocaille", which stands for a mass of pebbles that are self-organised in a completely unpredictable mess, for instance on the beach or in the mountains. Rococo moved away from the stranglehold that religion had on the arts: it was capricious, asymmetrical, charming and worldly. As Europe got mired in various wars between Germany, France and Britain, the general style got much more austere again and people embraced neo-classicism. But in the 1830s and 1840s, the seemingly unlimited fortunes of the Industrial Revolution sparked a revival of Rococo, once again creating natural shapes that are not always symmetrical and don't particularly make rational sense. This coffee cup can...

H&R Daniel Teacup Trio, White, Floral, Etruscan Shape, Regency circa 1825
Located in London, GB
This is a rare and beautiful teacup trio made by H&R Daniel in about 1825. The set is potted in the "Etruscan" shape and is decorated in a white ground with a beautiful floral pattern and gilt anthemion sprigs. The trio consists of a teacup, a coffee cup and a saucer. In the 19th Century that's how cups and saucers were sold; as you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, why invest in an extra saucer? We have a matching cake plate as well, please see separate listing. The H & R Daniel porcelain factory was founded by Henry Daniel, son of a family of master colour makers. He headed up the decoration department in the famous Spode factory where he oversaw all the beautiful early Spode decorations. In 1822 he opened his own factory with his son Richard, creating a truly iconic body of work with the most subtle colours and beautifully painted flowers and landscapes. The Daniel factory was the last true cottage industry among the English porcelain factories, resisting the increase of industrialisation and mass production. This resulted in extraordinary and unrivalled quality, but it probably also led to the factory having to close its doors in 1846 because it could no longer compete with others who did modernise. Daniel porcelain can be hard to identify as the factory was only around for about two decades, but this short duration and the low output also means that Daniel items have become true collectors' items. This set is potted in the "Etruscan" shape, a neoclassical shape with a strikingly angular handle and a graceful classical shape. The set is unmarked except the faded pattern number 3863 on the coffee cup, which points to a date of 1825. A picture of this pattern can be seen on plate 34 of Michael Berthoud and Lybne Price's "Daniel Patterns on Porcelain". CONDITION REPORT The set is in perfect antique condition except some very light rubbing as visible in the pictures. Antique British porcelain...

Grainger Worcester Tea Set, Rococo Revival, Sevres-Style Birds, circa 1830
Located in London, GB
This is a tea set produced by Grainger Worcester in circa 1830, which was the Rococo Revival era. The set is decorated with birds and consists of a teapot, teapot stand or cake plate and two narrow cups and saucers. Grainger was one of the leading factories in Worcester in the 19th century. It started in the early days of British bone china production at the very beginning of the century, and was merged with Royal Worcester about 100 years later. During this era they were among the leaders of china production, producing exceptionally finely painted and sculpted forms, often jewelled, pierced or reticulated and decorated with exceptional art work. This set is potted in the Rococo Revival style and closely resembles tea services made by Henry Daniel - Grainger was known for making close and very nice imitations of the first class designs by Daniel. The teapot has a nice handle with a large thumb rest and a collared rim. The cups, which are probably coffee cups as they are narrow, have beautifully shaped "rustic bean" handles that closely resemble Henry Daniel's designs of that era. The items are simple white with beautifully hand painted birds in the Sevres style, as well as gilt vine motif. The rims are gadrooned, as was popular around this time. An image of the teapot shape and pattern 1681 (although a more luxurious version with feet, which this teapot doesn't have) can be found in Michael Berthoud's "An Anthology of British Teapots...

Samuel Alcock Porcelain Teacup Trio, Pink, Gilt and Sublime Landscapes, ca 1827
Located in London, GB
A “true trio” consisting of a teacup, coffee cup and saucer in “bell embossed” shape, pink ground with elaborate gilt and very finely painted landscape reserves Pattern 2464 Year: ca 1827 Size: teacup 10cm (4“), coffee cup 8.2cm (3.25“), saucer 14.7cm (5.75“) diameter Condition: very minor rubbing, light crazing on the coffee cup with a very fine associated glaze line The Samuel Alcock factory was operative in Staffordshire between 1822 and 1856, after which it was bought by Sir James Duke and Nephews. The factory started as a partnership between the young Samuel Alcock and the older Ralph Stevenson, who provided the factory and capital. Alcock quickly took the factory to great heights, building one of the biggest factories of its time. Alcock jumped on the new Rococo Revival fashion and served a huge new middle class market. The reason we now don't hear much about Samuel Alcock porcelain is that much of it has been mis-identified over the years and attributed to Coalport, Ridgway, Rockingham or others; Alcock did not mark any of his porcelain save a few rare pieces, and the numbering system is difficult to understand. However, the wares are still wide spread and many are of great quality. This trio forms part of the Murray Pollinger Collection of Samuel Alcock Porcelain. Most of the collection is not publicly available yet, but if you would like to get access to the first 100 lots, please sign up for our mailing list...

H & R Daniel Porcelain Teacup, Apple Green with Pink Roses, Rococo Revival C1840
Located in London, GB
This is a rare and beautiful teacup and saucer made by H&R Daniel in about 1840. This set is potted in the "Sutherland" shape, which was used between 1840 and 1844. The shape is a graceful but rather restrained Rococo Revival style with a generous bell shaped cup. The set is decorated in a very beautiful apple green ground colour with light gilding and beige rim designs, and both pieces have a beautiful hand painted rose in the centre.  The set is unmarked except the faded pattern number 7874, which points to a date of about 1840. CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition without any damage, repairs or crazing, and just some very rubbing as visible in the pictures, mostly on the outside of the cup. Rockingham Tea Service for 4, Gilt Seaweed, Flowers, Rococo Revival, 1832
Located in London, GB
On offer is a rare and stunning full tea service made by Rockingham in about 1832. The service consists of a large teapot with cover and a stand, 4 teacups, 4 coffee cups, 4 saucers, a milk jug, a sucrier with cover, a large slop bowl and a cake plate. It is rare to come across a tea service this good, and it is fabulous both on display and for use. Although the Rockingham pottery started some time in the mid-18th Century, when we say "Rockingham" it mostly means the Rockingham pottery as it was run between 1826 and 1842, creating high quality bone china table ware. The pottery rose to fame when King William VI ordered a huge dinner service containing 200 pieces. It took 600 people 7 years to complete this service, and by the time it was finished the King died. It ended up being used for the first time at the subsequent coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837. In the end, the undertaking, although it brought important business from all British aristocracy, had ruined the pottery and it never recovered. It closed it doors in 1842. This story serves to show the status, artistic sophistication and capacity of the Rockingham pottery in the 1830s. As the pottery only produced between 1826 and 1842, good pieces are relatively rare and to find this service is a treat. It is made of sturdy, thickly potted bone china. The design is cream coloured with gilt seaweed all over and beautiful small hand painted flower bouquets. The shapes of the items deserve extra attention. This set is an example of the Rococo Revival, with lavish twists and turns. The teapot spout and handle seem to have little twigs or leaves growing out of them - or are they fish fins? Whatever they are, it is highly charming. The shape of the pot itself is a beautiful pear shape; generous yet sophisticated with perfectly balanced dimensions. The cups are typical Rococo bell-shaped cups with a wide opening. The lids of the teapot and sucrier are in the iconic and striking crown shape, a sign that this set was made after the pottery attracted the King's patronage. An example of an identically shaped teapot with a similar seaweed pattern can be found in Miller & Berthoud's book "An Anthology of British Teapots...
