About the Item

Dodie Thayer Large Lettuce Ware Pottery Tureen and Underdish, Dated 1973 A naturalistically modelled large trompe l'oeil pottery lettuce ware leaf soup tureen and underdish with cover. Dimensions: 9½ high × 16 inches diameter. Marks: Incised signature and date to underside of tureen ‘Dodie Thayer Au Bon Gout Palm Beach April '73’ and to plate ‘Dodie Thayer Au Bon Gout Palm Beach’ with pineapple mark. (Au Bon Gout, a boutique in Palm Beach, sold her wares. Owning a complete set of Dodie Thayer lettuce ware was a status symbol for Palm Beach’s affluent. It didn’t matter how famous or wealthy a client was, the waiting list could be months or sometimes years for finished pieces.) Reference: Doris DuBois Thayer Hawthorn, better known as Dodie, began modestly creating lettuce leaf designs in her home workshop in the early 1960s. “I wanted to do something creative, and I liked working with my hands, so I took up ceramics.” Quoted in Marian King, The Greening of Tableware, Palm Beach Daily News Throughout her career the unmistakable green glaze of Dodie Thayer’s wares attracted the attention of some of the greatest American socialites of the 20th century, including: the Duchess of Windsor. C.Z Guest (sold by her daughter Cornelia Guest, at Sotheby’s New York, October 17, 2015, lots 500-508, for $112,875), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Mary Sayles Booker Braga, and Barbara and Frank Sinatra.
