Extraordinary 1912 Patented Major Leage Baseball Game
About the Item
1912 is a wonderful, early date for anything related to baseball in America, especially when it's as boldly graphic and as well-made as this extravagant board game, produced by the Philadelphia Game Manufacturing Company, located at 335 N. 3rd St.. Made of brightly colored lithographed paper, encased in wood, the game has a large nickle-plated spinner that has substantial weight and nicely turned wooden pegs. The game was produced into the 1920's, as evidenced here by the exchangeable 1921 rosters that accompany it from various teams. I have inserted New York and Boston, but there are numerous others [encased in Mylar pockets on the back of the frame]. Babe Ruth and Willie Mays are among the players listed on the NY line-up.
All of the pegs appear to be present (9 white player pegs, 9 red, and 4 red scoring pegs). The patent information reads: "Patented Oct. 22nd, 1912 No. 1,2042,142, Other Patents Pending". An accompanying coupon reads: "This COUPON and Thirty (3) Cents, in cash or stamps when mailed directly to us, will entitle the purchaser of the "MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL GAME," in which this COUPON appears, to a set of the latest line-up Cards published at the time this COUPON is received. Current year line-up cards are not published before September 15th. --Regular price 50 cents.--" New sets of cards were available each year, so the game dates within the 9-year window between 1912 and 1921.
Mounting: The case has been recessed in a mount made from archival foam core covered in 100% cotton twill, black in color, which has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The coupon was also recessed. The wooden shadowbox frame is simple and black in color. The front is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: The lithographs have minor, expected wear from obvious use. We removed the hinges from the case so that it could be more easily mounted.
