Green painted Southern Yellow Pine 19th century carriage strong box forged iron

About the Item

Green folk painted Southern yellow pine carriage trunk or strong box. The size is just about perfect for liquor bottles, too. Dovetail construction with hand forged clasp and hinges. The original finish was likely brown and it looks like it got it's first coat of green in the late 19th century when a lid repair (described below) was done. A second lighter shade of green that really causes the color to "pop" likely done between 1930 and the early 70's. Both layers were applied early enough that there is significant shadowing under the clasp as the result of UV light over the years subtly affecting the paint shades. The tinware straps reinforcements to the rear of the lid are held in place by 19th century cut nails and were painted green with the first coat of paint. There is evidence of minor infestation likely a century ago to the front corner and photos illustrate a good example of what legitimate infestation looks like (as opposed to drill work on fake examples). This is a sound functional box, with patina, hardware and a history of surface and work that is seldom found on the market. Suitable for any private or institutional collection of painted and/or southern furniture. This was sourced in South Alabama on the Gulf Coast. Please note that during the 19th century tinsmiths, often itinerant (and most farmers) would have commonly executed repairs in this fashion.
