19th Century Russian Icon of Saint Nicholas
About the Item
19th century Russian Icon of Saint Nicholas, likely first half 19th century, with I believe egg tempera on gessoed wooden panel, depicting Christ in a hemi-circle reserve in the clouds at top of panel, looking down and blessing Saints Simeon, Nicholas and Panteleimon, on slightly curved pine plank. The color palette suggests the icon may be from the Kiev region.
Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was of course the patron saint of Russia, but also the patron of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, prostitutes, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, and students. Saint Simeon the Righteous was from the Ukraine but moved west and became the patron Saint of the Ural region. Saint Panteleimon the All-Compassionate was one of the "Holy Unmercenary Healers" and was a martyr in 4th century Nicodemia.
The icon is in good condition, structurally sound, and in strong restored paint - the surface show a history of scuffs, chips and loss, and subsequent in-painting at some point in the distant past.
