Antique Oil Painting "On the Grand Canal" by James Salt 1850-1903
About the Item
"On the Grand Canal" by James Salt (1850-1903) signed J. Salt (lower right). This beautiful oil on canvas captures the most painted city in the history of art - Venice.
Painted in a manner which resembles the school of Canaletto with a touch of Turner.
The painting delightfully presents the city with its buildings on water and a few boats and gondolas. In the background the sky is slightly overcast which might indicate that the storm was just about to start.
The artist used very delicate pastel colours to add some mystery to the scenery with some vivid turquoise and slightly golden beige.

James Salt (1850-1903)
English artist painting mainly scenes of Venice in oils but with a gentle colouring and atmospheric feel.
The artist traditionally called James Salt, whose output seems to have been confined to Venetian capricci and about whom hardly anything is recorded, is more likely to be identified with Thomas Salt, born at Woolstanton, Staffordshire. In the 1891 census his trade was given as 'decorative painter (artist)'
