Karl Jensen: View from a thatched farmhouse. Signed and dated K. J. 1910. Oil on canvas. The Old Homested was painted by Karl Jensen who was born in Denmark in 1851. The house and surrounding fields have an austere look. It is almost drab with its lack of any vibrant color but Jensen is a master of the use of muted colors. The sparse light reflecting off the whitewashed walls of the house seems to scatter over the roof of the place with it growth of green moss which connects the earth to the sky which looks windswept. To the observer the house perhaps holds secrets of its 400 year old history. With the tidy yard leading to the house we sense that someone has been afoot but the weathered facade and sagging roof give the aura of abandonment. Karl Jensen was a master of architectural painting as seen in his paintings of palaces and interiors as well as for his landscape paintings. The Old Homested contains masterful elements of both genres of painting and make it a work of art that will be highly appreciated by a discerning collector. Exhibited: The painting has presumably been exhibited at Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling in 1910, as no. 94 “Et hus paa Landet”.
