Turner, William Lakin - Original Oil on Canvas - Applethwaite, Underskiddaw

About the Item

A fine original oil on canvas by William Lakin Turner (b. 1865 – d. 1936) Turner was born to George Turner, a fine artist known as the Derbyshire Constable, and his wife Eliza. William was the eldest of four children. He inherited his father’s artistic talent and studied first under his father along with Louis Bosworth Hurt (1856-1929) and later at the West London College of Arts. He is known for his delicate British landscapes. His work was frequently shown in notable exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Artists and at the Royal Hibernian and his paintings are on display in numerous galleries and museums including the Ruskin Museum. 'Rydal Water' which W.L. Turner painted in 1899 was bought by Beatrix Potter and still hangs in her home, now a National Trust property, Hill Top. This very beautiful and well executed oil on canvas in its original frame and in excellent original condition depicts a winter country village scene with sheep on the lane. Probably the village of Applethwaite, Underskiddaw, Cumbria where William and his wife ‘Lina’, whom he had married in London in 1892, were living in 1895 and it is here in the Lake District that he produced his best loved and best known.
