Koi Fish Installation Figure by Robert "Bob" Matheny
About the Item
Koi Fish installation figure by Southern California Artist Robert "Bob" Matheny. This piece was acquired at Robert Matheny’s estate. The piece is 16” in length by 11” in width and 9.5” in height. Construction consists of mixed media (wood, ceramic, paper, paint, some hardware). The larger wood block in this box presents a wood carving koi figure. On the front and right side of the box, a wood cutout of a koi (smaller and larger) appear as a ceramic koi sculpture floats on the left side. A ceramic koi figure “swims” in the middle of the box as shadows of other fish play below “its” surface. The back panel has a passage in Japanese. Koi fish in Japan represent good fortune or luck and are associated with perseverance in adversity and string of purpose. This piece portrays an allegory to life and its stages from a variety of angles. The beauty of this piece transcends its original purpose of an installation.
