Spanish Colonial, Painted Wooden Crucifix of Christ on a Stylized Tree

About the Item

This carved wooden crucifix of Christ on a stylized tree form, is Guatemalan or Mexican, likely created in the late 1800s by a naive artist of the period, 19th century. It has been painted, and perhaps repainted, through the years. This devotional piece is in a heavily distressed condition, with a fracture to the top, center, diamond-shaped red finial. It appears to have been roughly repaired many years ago. There are other obvious fractures, as in the intersection of the Christ figures arms and shoulders. This carved figure has been stabilized on the wooden tree/cross with black thread by some previous owner. There are very old, insect/worm holes in several spots and other cracks and losses. In spite of all these distressed details, the piece is infinitely charming, visually arresting and even cheerful in its blue paint with red and white accents.
