Carved and Painted Wood Paddle Surinam Maroon Ndyuka

About the Item

Finely painted with traditional geometric designs on both sides of one end, and subtle carved and incised flowing designs on both sides of the other end and adjoining shaft of the paddle. This example features an old used, worn patina and dates to the 1950s, early for this culture. The designs, both carved and painted, show strong influences of their African heritage. The Ndyuka Maroons culture originated during the 18th century slave trade when escaped slaves gathered and formed villages along the Tapanahony River in the Amazon jungle. In 1760, the Ndyuka signed a treaty with the Dutch colonizers, who allowed them territorial autonomy. The 10th of October is still a day celebrated among some Surinamese Maroons. Their culture remained largely intact until the last decades of the 20th century when a large number of the Ndyuka people began moving from their ancestral villages to the coast, especially in and around Paramaribo, the country's capital.

  • Swedish Gustavian Period Carved and Polychrome Painted Signed Mora Clock

One of the finest signed examples of a late 18th century Swedish Mora long case clock that we have seen. The decorative carving is exquisite and the paint is early and probably original. The movement does function, but would have to be set after delivery. A top respected clock conservator did go over the movement to assure functionality. The original weights and pendulum are included, as well as a key. Gustavian Mora clocks are a type of long case clock which were made in, and derived their name from, the town of Mora in Dalarna province, Sweden. Production began in the late 18th century and continued through most of the 19th century. Mora clock faces...
