About the Item
Red Afshar Sumak Salt Bag, Late 19th Century
A central white diamond is highlighted in white cotton on this Afshar salt bag. Throughout the field, geometric scarab-like elements are drawn within diamonds to form a repeat tile design. These elements, which are executed in the Sumak technique, may give a clue to the origin of similar elements executed in pile by various tribal weaving groups throughout Persia and beyond. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin.
