Large Mexican Folk Art Wrought Iron Rooster Weathervane, c. 1940

About the Item

A large circa 1940 Mexican Folk Art wrought iron rooster weathervane presented on a rustic reclaimed wood base. Features a sheet metal rooster perched upon a directional arrow, with wrought iron scroll work on delightful display throughout. Topped by an oversized hammered-point cross designed to attract both the eye and errant lightning strikes, as it would’ve originally been mounted on a chimney with the bottom prongs anchored in mortar. Handsomely weathered, with one side retaining more of its black finish, and the other having a warm oxidized patina. Some specks of red paint in various spots offer a tantalizing hint of its more colorful past. Large scroll work arcs encompassing aft end of arrow serve as a counterbalance to the rooster and scroll work opposite it, allowing the directional to easily rotate 360 degrees with a gentle touch or breeze. Mounted on a rustic plank of reclaimed wood with an embedded iron spike, bent iron stake, and rusted piece of sheet metal nicely complementing the overall character. Dimensions listed include base. Weathervane is H 41.38 in. x W 36 in. x D .75 in.
