Rare Pair of Gold and White Candlesticks, Waylande Gregory

About the Item

This rare pair of porcelain candlesticks, brilliantly glazed in gold and white, are signed by Waylande Gregory, the pioneering 20th century sculptor and ceramicist. Prodigious and indefatigable, Gregory produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A new exhibition on Gregory is now on view at the University of Richmond Museums.

  • "Leaping Antelope Dish", Rare, Early work by Waylande Gregory for Cowan
    By Waylande Gregory, Cowan Pottery
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This lovely oblong dish features one of the classic subjects of high style Art Deco design -- the leaping antelope -- but in other respects it is highly unusual. It is an early work of Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery, before he struck out on his own in the 1930s, and it is finished with a striking, speckled glaze in a rich, burnt sienna color, with a touch of green in the depths of the dish. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft...
