Belle Époque Style French Ormolu and Pink Porcelain Twelve-Light Chandelier

About the Item

This beautiful antique French chandelier is crafted in the elegant Belle Époque style. The chandelier features a delicate pink porcelain body, which is offset by the surrounding golden gilt bronze to create a vivid visual contrast. Issuing from the central body are twelve individual ormolu light branches, which are decorated with swirling foliate decorations. The work is surrounded by an ormolu finial of floral design. More of a period than a specific style of design, the European Belle Époque began in the late 19th Century and continued until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The period was, in fact, given its name after World War One, as it was felt to be a Golden Age in contrast to the horror of the war. The Belle Époque was emblematic of an optimistic time, when arts, technology, science and cultural innovations were encouraged and flourished. The art and design that emerged from the period is typified by the sense of freedom and pleasure that it evokes.

    By Maison Baguès
    Located in New York, NY
This chandelier was probably made by the Paris bronzier Baguès, circa 1900. The botanical forms of the cage, and the shapes of the rock-crystal prisms, recall the Rococo style of the 18th century. But the sinuous cast-bronze curves channel the Art Nouveau style that was then all the rage. The seamless union of the two styles is a hallmark of the Belle Époque...
