Brass Multi-Lite Pendant by Louis Weisdorf for Lyfa, Denmark 1972

About the Item

This Multi-Lite pendant was designed by Danish architect and designer Louis Weisdorf in 1972, and manufactured by the Danish lighting company Lyfa. It is one of the most recognisable Danish lighting designs. The pendant features a sculptural, multi-layered brass design. As its name suggests, the pendant can be used in multiple ways. The creative geometric shapes allow it to be customisable by individually rotating the shades. The Multi-Lite can be transformed into diverse combinations where the light can be directed both upwards and downwards, or in an asymmetrical way. This can be done thanks to the core, a two-cylinder form that can work as a shade on its own, with the addition of a large metal ring anchoring two, quarter-spherical shells. This model was created in 1972, in the midst of the economic recession, and was therefore one of the few designs of Weisdorf’s that were taken into production in that era. The original manufacturer was Lyfa, the design company Weisdorf worked closely with during the 1960s and 1970s. A second Multi-Lite is available at our Gallery in a slightly different, champagne-like colour. (As seen in the last picture) Condition: In good vintage condition. Dimensions: 13.78 in Ø x 15.75 in H 35 cm Ø x 40 cm H About the designer: Louis Weisdorf was born in 1932 in Denmark. Following his graduation from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1954, he worked as an architect and designer in a variety of fields, or as he described it, his career "specialises in versatility". This sentiment and his background in architecture is clearly reflected in his designs. During most of the 1960s, Weisdorf worked at Tivoli, the amusement park located in Copenhagen. He was the main assistant to the park’s chief architect, Simon P. Henningsen. At the end of the decade, he set up his own design studio in the Danish capital, where he designed for Danish and international clients. Weisdorf worked closely with several other designers, including Verner Panton, Poul Henningsen, Le Klint, and Acton Bjørn. He became most well-known for his ingenious Multi-Lite collection of lamps, which incorporates adjustable, cylindrical sheets of metal in two layers. The collection was produced by Danish manufacturer Lyfa during the 1960s and 1970s, and was later taken on by Gubi. • "Saga" Wall Sconces by Kay Kørbing for Lyfa, Denmark 1960s
    By Kay Korbing, Lyfa
    Located in Utrecht, NL
These Lyfa-edition “Saga” wall sconces by Danish architect and designer, Kay Kørbing are true collectors’ pieces. By the 1950s, Lyfa had built an international reputation for original, high-quality, modernist lamps. In the postwar era, the company collaborated with esteemed architects and designers to produce minimalist, sculptural pieces including these lamps. Made of brass, metal, and crystal, the design of this model is entirely in the vein of modernism, while also sticking to the main ideals of Danish design, such as functionality. This can be observed in the lamps’ build that allows them to be faced either up- or downwards. The proportions are carefully thought out, with three main sections comprising the design. The three elements - the brass base, black metal shade holder, and the crystal glass shade - are clearly separated both by their shape, material, and colour. Most eye-catching are the Orrefors crystal glass shades in a peculiar shape that appear to be roll cut. Orrefors has been established in Swedish design tradition since 1898. Glass from the forests of Småland was incomparable: “Il n’y as que ça!” (There is nothing like it!) exclaimed the 1925 Paris World Fair. As these sconces showcase, the glass and shape are always in focus, combined with elegance, simplicity, and confidence. The predominantly round shapes are balanced by the square backplate. The artistic design is very honest in a purely Scandinavian manner, exposing the joinery and the materials’ natural qualities as well. This pair of “Saga” wall sconces is a stunning example of how the 1960s are still able to deliver modern "art" to any interior. The producer, Lyfa, produced some cabin lamps...

  • "Auditorie" Pendant Lamp by Svend Middelboe for Nordisk Solar, Denmark, 1960s
By Nordisk Solar Co., Svend Middelboe
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Auditorie” series contains three lamps differing in size, this pendant is “Auditorie 3”, the largest one with the most shade layers. Known for its long, elegant neck and multilayered shade system, this rare model is among Svend Middelboe’s most coveted designs. This model has several common details with the Verona pendant light; it was designed with functionality in mind, specifically to spread light in the most efficient way. The inner shades diffuse light and there is no glare. The large main shade, dictates the design; the upper umbrella-like shade is connected to the stem that contains the socket. There are three more shades gradually decreasing in size. Like the Verona model, the surface on the outside is brass anodized aluminium, while the inside is lacquered white. From the late 1950s, Nordisk Solar Compagni—or simply “Solar” (as seen in adverts and catalogues from the era)—focused entirely on manufacturing high-quality lighting. They collaborated with the era’s most well-known Danish lighting designers and used their expertise in using plastic for the production of radio sets, to create exceptional lighting fixtures in the late 1950s and 1960s. Svend Middelboe’s pendants were among the best-selling models in the company’s catalogue. Danish lighting manufacturer Nordisk Solar was founded in 1919 by Jacob L. Jørgensen and Herluf Sørensen. Svend MIddelboe joined the company later, and soon became a permanent designer. The company is still well-known today on the vintage markets for its Mid-Century Modern pendants and layered lighting...
