Large French Rococo Style Thirty-Three Light Ormolu Chandelier

About the Item

This superb ormolu chandelier is crafted in the ornate Rococo style. The chandelier features thirty-three lights arranged over three tiers, each light springing from an S-scrolled acanthus leaf moulded ormolu branch extensively decorated with ormolu bows and floral garlands. The central baluster stem descends from the top towards espagnolette-like models of the Three Graces, each figure sitting with her arms held aloft. The stem terminates in a large artichoke drop finial. Chandelier made of chiseled brass plated with 24 carats gold. 3 women, flower garlands, pineapples . 33 lights on 3 levels. This noble antique chandelier features the typical Rococo style of the 18th-century reign of Louis XV. The French have always set the trend and while Baroque art originated in Rome, Rococo art originated in France in the 1720s. Rococo set the standard for what was in vogue and held a complete monopoly helped France become the fashion center of the eighteenth century. The carved motifs in the entire structure are gorgeous, ethereal, and sumptuous. Rococo style depicts natural floral motifs but poeticizes them with asymmetrical curves. The lines carved motifs at the canopy of the chandelier and candle holder are all curved, it can be said that the curves on the light branch resemble vines, which makes the chandelier eye-catching but not dull. The vines and acanthus leaf pattern are embellished in this antique French chandelier with gilt bronze. This sublime chandelier has three levels with 30 lights. Each branch of the lights is cast in gilt bronze and lavishly decorated with floral garlands. Candle holders are meticulously and elaborately carved like a blooming flower when surrounded by layers of acanthus leaves. The canopy above, depicts espagnolette-like drooping and flowery vines hanging down as if holding three women's arms aloft. The image of these three women is The three Graces from Greek mythology. According to ancient Greek literature, The Three Graces is the image of the three daughters of Zeus: Euphrosyne, Aglaia and Thalia. The gentleness of the three graces all brings out the familiar high aesthetic of the Rococo style in the 18th century. Finishing off the lower body of this large splendid ormolu chandelier is a lifelike artichoke.

These are a pair of gilded candelabras inspired by the Louis XVI style-a style originating from France. The main shaft of the candelabras are constructed from female statues. Unlike the rest of the gilded parts of the candelabra, the women are made from patinated bronze and seems to be standing on one leg while holding up the candelabras’ arms, representing the intense vitality and brilliant beauty of women. At the feet of two young women holding lamps are soft and flexible waves, exuding strength and health, honoring the beauty of the young woman. By taking a closer look you will see that there are five arms radiating in all directions. In Western culture, the number 5 symbolizes origin, adaptability, adventure, love of freedom and diversity. The lamp base is constructed with a quadrilateral support with Acanthus inspired feet, which are classic motifs and delicately sculpted leaves. The combination of gold and bronze creates the subtle and rich tone to it, giving it true antique touch...
