Pillars of Meerschaum: Evening White - New York

About the Item

Feyza Kemahlioglu is inspired by the architecture and culture of her native Istanbul. Feyza’s unique lighting sculptures entitled 'Pillars of Meerschaum,’ are studies into the juxtaposition of tradition and modernity. The leading material in her new collection is Meerschaum, German for "seafoam", a soft white clay mineral, found mainly in Eskisehir, a small city in central Turkey. By taking an antiquated material and giving it a contemporary aesthetic and function, FEYZ Studio marries the old and the new to create timeless design. Turkish craftsman carved the Meerschaum with intricate patterns and perforations to diffuse the light. The stone is combined with hand blown glass and brass created in New York. The blown glass compliments the detailing of the Meerschaum with the addition of delicate textures made with cane and gold leaf.

Rippling undulations in gold iridescence and soft, organic lines dominate this ethereal but weighty composition, an exceptional example of a Tiffany Studios New York "Turtleback Tile" chandelier. Three tiers of vertically oriented rectangular Turtleback tiles with rounded corners graduate in size, with substantially sized tiles decorating the bottom-most tier and the apex of the domed shade featuring tightly clustered tiles in miniature. Sumptuous and romantically uneven borders frame each tile, accentuating their unique silhouettes and adding a dark, matte element to contrast the bright, shimmering gold that dominates the shade. • Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Tiffany Studios, Louis Comfort Tiffany
    Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans.
