Russian 19th Century Neoclassical Style Bronze, Ormolu and Glass Chandelier
About the Item
A stunning and extremely decorative Russian early 19th century Neo-Classical st. patinated bronze, ormolu and cobalt blue glass eight arm chandelier. The chandelier displays a most impressive bottom ormolu foliate finial centering the beautiful fitted cobalt blue glass pane. A slender ormolu band extends along the center decorated with fine foliate mounts and rosettes. The striking eight scrolled rinceau shaped arms branch out from handsome richly chased lion heads and display graceful reeded floral candle cups. Eight foliate and linked patinated bronze and ormolu chains lead up to the exceptional canopy with a beautiful inverted finial and fabulous pierced palettes.

Chopin designed a chandelier for The Vladimir Hall, in the Grand Kremlin Palace, in Moscow and also designed a chandelier of the Tsarevich's in the Peterhof Palace in 1850, another chandelier for the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg (1849) and the palace of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich (1855-86) (ibid p. 168). He favored the 'French Rococo' style which gave him the freedom to experiment with exuberant and whimsical designs for Russian designers and marketplace, as well as for the Russian nobility.
