Elegant Pair of Bronze Torcheres by F. Barbedienne, P. Dubois and A. Falguière
Located in PARIS, FR
MODEL PRESENTED AT THE 1867 PARIS UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION
Listed in the Ferdinand Barbedienne’s catalogue as the “Deux femmes debout” (Two standing ladies)
Signed on each one P. Dubois – F. Barbedienne Fondeur and A. Falguière – F. Barbedienne Fondeur
Rare pair of parcel-gilt and patinated bronze figures, representing two women dressed in Antique style costume with jewels, each upholding a seven lights-arm candelabra. Standing on round bronze bases and black marble socles.
Paul Dubois (1827-1905) entered the Paris Beaux-Arts School in 1858. He exhibited at the 1865 Salon the Chanteur Florentin, illustrating Florentine sculpture, observed after his journey in Italy. This work, cast that time in silvered bronze, was exhibited at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition (now preserved at the Orsay museum). Dubois' success brought him many commissions, both private (Portrait of Duc d'Aumale) and public (Jeanne d'Arc, in Reims). Appointed curator at the Luxembourg museum in 1873, Dubois became also a member of the Institute and finally headmaster at the Beaux-Arts School in 1878.
Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900) studied under Jouffroy at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts, began his career at the Paris Salon in 1857 and won as soon as 1859 the “Prix de Rome”. Falguière became very quickly successful and was several times awarded medals at the Salon, such in 1868 with his marble sculpture Tarcisius the Christian Boy-Martyr, or at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he won the first medal in his category. Thanks to that success, he was immediately commissioned by private collectors as well as by the French State, whom asked him in 1878 to realize the Triomphe de la République, placed in 1881 at the summit of the Paris Arch of Triumph...

Neoclassical Alabaster Torch Sconces
Located in New York, NY
These pure white sconces sit upon torch like bases, illuminating the room in the fusion of classical and romantic forms, typical of the neoclassical period. Alabaster lighting was the first used electrical lighting in Europe, prized for its ability to softly diffuse light.
As mentioned above, the Neo-Renaissance style was in reality an eclectic blending of past styles, which the architect selected on the whims of his patrons. In the true Renaissance era there was a division of labour between the architect, who designed the exterior highly visible shell, and others—the artisans—who decorated and arranged the interior. The original Italian mannerist house was a place for relaxation and entertaining, convenience and comfort of the interior being a priority; in the later Baroque designs, comfort and interior design were secondary to outward appearance. This was followed by the Neoclassical period, which gave importance to the proportions and dignity of interiors, but still lost the comfort and internal convenience of the mannerist period. It was during the Neo-Renaissance period of the 19th century that the mannerist comforts were re-discovered and taken a step further. Not only did the improved building techniques of the 1850s allow the glazing of formerly open loggias and arches with the newly invented sheets of plate glass, providing the first "picture windows", but also the blending of architectural styles allowed interiors and exteriors to be treated differently. It was at this time that the concept of "furnishing styles" manifested itself, allowing distinctions to be made between interior rooms...

Very Fine Pair of Mid-Victorian Parcel Gilt Bronze Oil Lamps, by Hinks
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A very fine pair of mid-Victorian parcel gilt bronze oil lamps, by Hinks, each modelled as a bearded warrior dressed in the style of a Saxon king with a crowned helmet, broadsword and double-headed battle axe, standing in front of a slender scroll support surmounted by a cut glass oil reservoir, all set on a shaped ormolu base encircled with a victor’s wreath of oak leaves, and raised on an octagonal bronze base, converted to electricity, stamped ‘Hinks & Sons Patent’ on the fitting. English, circa 1860.
Footnote: James Hinks (1816-1905). Leaving home at 16 he tried many trades from wood turning, japanning, brush making, die sinking, medal making and even being a pub landlord, before manufacturing oil lamps. Working from the Crystal Lamp Works, Great Hampton Street, Birmingham, he was joined by his son Joseph and renamed the company ‘James Hinks and Son in 1862’. They won a patent for ‘improvements in lamps’ the following year and swiftly launched the ‘Patent Duplex Lamp...
