Angelo Ostuni for O-Luce, floor lamp, model '312 V2', Carrara marble, brass, coated aluminum, Italy, 1949 This floor lamp is designed by the influential designer in the field of lighting design Angelo Ostuni in 1949 which his brother Giuseppe took into production for their new established lighting design company 'O-Luce'. His first models designed between 1946 and 1948 were made in a more traditional manner to suit the taste of the Milanese upper-middle class. Ostuni's shift in his design approach is clearly displayed in the features of this designed model. Not only is this lamp aesthetically pleasing, it is clearly designed to provide a light source to adjust to one's own requirement. O-Luce manufactured an extremely complicated construction of rollers and springs inside the lamp bar (less than 15mm circumference) which allowed a smooth height adjustment without any cable impingement. Combined with a precision ball joint at the base, this lamp has an almost unlimited rotating telescopic flexibility. In addition, the cone-shaped aluminum shade coated in ocher yellow can be rotated to change the direction of the light partition. In 1950, Angelo Ostuni and his brother received international recognition for their exceptional lighting designs, mostly for the application of adjustable features in their designs which was highly innovative during that period. Angelo Ostuni (1904-1981) was an Italian designer and the elder brother of Giuseppe Ostuni (1907-1994) who established the Italian lighting company O-Luce. Together, they collaborated on numerous of designs for O-Luce that became one of Italy's leading lighting design companies. Angelo Ostuni was born in Trieste, Italy in 1904, when the city was part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Ten years later, the First World War began. In 1915 Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire and soon the Italian army bombed Trieste in May 1915. The Ostuni family endured some difficult times and eventually moved to Milan in 1919. Floor lamp model 399 (from cornalux series) with structure in nickel-plated metal, lacquered metal and cast iron. The lamp bulb is adjustable in height achieved by a bracket that allows the lamp to be slid up and down the lamp stem. This lamp was designed by the Italian duo formed by Angelo Ostuni & Renato Forti and manufactured by O-Luce in 1958. Measurements: H 141 x Ø 24 diameter (base 20cm). Founded in 1945 by Giuseppe Ostuni, Oluce is the oldest Italian design company still operating in the lighting world, a unique production excellence which translates passionate aesthetic and technological research into the potential of light into actual form. Over the years, Oluce has succeeded in building a collection structured like a tale, rich and multifaceted, inhabited by products that transcend fashion to become Italian design icons. Its relationship with the design world begins In 1951, Oluce successfully took part in the IX Triennale, presenting – in the lighting section curated by Achille, Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – a Luminator designed by Franco Buzzi. As was typical at that time, the company instantly gained visibility on the international panorama thanks to Domus magazine. Major success was then reasserted by Tito Agnoli with nominations at the second edition of the Compasso d’Oro awards, in 1955, for his two lamps (the 363 floor lamp and a special bookshelf model).
