Bernard Rooke Studio Ceramic Totem Lamp, England [II]
About the Item
A mid-20th century totem lamp by ceramicist Bernard Rooke, England.
An early piece, and unusual to see this example of Rooke's work; hand-built, with great character in natural shades of brown, terracotta, light oatmeal and grey. A tall piece for the floor or a low plinth; broadly the same on both sides. This model has a large textured pyramid base, with the smaller upper components fused together - in later models the components were separate - and the blue/grey glaze to the lower disc is particularly unusual.
There are of signs of weathering and wear in line with age and use, and flaws arising from the crafting and firing process, including fine firing cracks (typically to the thicker clay of the base), nicks, glaze losses and minor asymmetry. See images for detail and overview. Felt pads level the base and provide protection. As with other early Rooke pieces this is not signed or stamped.
We have a second lamp of similar design available separately; you can see the two pieces together in images 14 and 15.
Wiring:
A new lamp-holder, taking a single E27 (screw-fitting) bulb, is in place; original wiring has been removed and we advise this is replaced in the country of install to ensure it meets your local needs and regulations. The wire leaves the base on the side (left side in the main image).
Shade:
In the main image we have shown the lamp with a simple hessian shade, newly made, which attaches at the bottom through the bulb-holder. This shade is available in medium or large sizes as shown in image 15. The lamp can be shipped with or without a shade; please note the size of the shade may affect the shipping costs.
Approximate dimensions:
Ceramic only:
H: 95.5cm
W: 20.5cm at the base
D: 19cm at the base
The overall height using the large shade is approximately 165cm and the medium shade is 148cm (as shown in image 15).
Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

- Large Bernard Rooke Table or Floor Lamp with Original ShadeBy Bernard RookeLocated in London, GBA monumental and unusual lamp by British potter, Bernard Rooke. An early piece, probably dating from the 1960s, and initialled BR on the side. Large-scale single-piece Rooke lamps are rare to see - kiln size often a limiting-factor - particularly with an original shade. The base is hand-built, with the lower section finished in a glaze of green/grey. The upper part is glazed showing natural terracotta tones and features raised patterns and piercing, finishing in pierced loops at the top. Both the base and shade are in good original condition, with normal wear from age and use and the hand-making process. A firing crack to the interior flat section of the base appears stable, and is not visible in use. Wiring: The original wiring has been removed and will need to be replaced in the country of install to meet local needs. The lamp-holder takes a bayonet-fitting bulb and we recommend low-heat models to protect this piece for the future. Shade: The lamp has its original shade, which is rare, and this one is an unusual size for Rooke designs. Overall it has retained pretty good shape, with a little "ovalling", minor marks and occasional short crack to the liner. The fitting is a duplex...Category
