Large Rispal 'Praying Mantis' Sculptural Floor Lamp in Mahogany

About the Item

Large Rispal 'Praying Mantis' Sculptural Floor Lamp in Mahogany. The iconic model #14.950 was originally designed in 1950 by François Rispal. This newly produced authorized re-edition is executed in richly grained mahogany with a signed "Rispal" brass detail where the body and legs intersect. The shade is made from pleated cellulose acetate, consistent with the original material, and ingeniously shaped through a unique process developed by the Rispal house in the 1950s. Made in France using many of the same small-scale manufacturing techniques, scrupulous attention to detail, materials and craftsmanship as the original. The avant-gardism of Rispal is exemplified by the Praying Mantis, a name actually coined over the years by antique dealers and decorators. The 'Praying Mantis' has become a timeless and sculptural icon of the golden age of French design much sought after by collectors in the know. The Rispal brand was recently relaunched by Douglas Mont, a respected artist, lighting designer and passionate Rispal collector. After years of assiduous research and experimentation, he relaunched Rispal with the help of Clément Bergès and Georgette Rispal, daughter of the company founder, reviving iconic designs from the golden age of French furniture. Douglas Mont, a lighting designer, Rispal collector, and true enthusiast of the brand, wanted to revive those emblematic creations of the golden age of French furniture. Years of research, meetings, and experiments eventually convinced him to re-launch the iconic brand. It seemed almost impossible to reproduce these lamps without the original plans or tools. The “Praying Mantis” lampshade is a good example: the technique used to produce the cellulose acetate lampshade, which was the emblematic piece of the brand, had to be completely reinvented. If there is one model that represents the avant-gardism of Rispal alone, it is undoubtedly the “praying man- tis.” Its surname comes from its organic design and striking similarity to the insect It was given over time by antique dealers and decorators despite the fact that Rispal products did not have names, only references. The “praying mantis” is often attributed to a certain Jean Rispal, though the reality is, Rispal lamps...
