Rare French 'New Barbarians' Floor Lamp or Sculpture by Garouste & Bonetti, 1980

About the Item

An important, small edition 'New Barbarians' collection standing lamp or torchiere from the initial, ground-breaking period of work of Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. The new Barbarians collection was G & B first major show. It re-set the tone of late 20th century design with it's unique synthesis of neoclassical, modern and Brutalist spirits which G & B infused their work. Composed of a Brutalist inspired, hand-hammered and hand-forged, bronzed iron tripod base set in a Classic X-form with a green cast stone reflector containing one Edison socket. Rarity: This is a rare, limited edition piece, it is one of five pieces made with bronzed iron and a green stone reflector. Signed: "B.G" on foot of iron base and on stone reflector.
