Wrought Iron Lamp by Gilbert Poillerat

About the Item

Floor lamp by Gilbert Poillerat featuring patinated and gilt wrought iron. The patinated cylindrical center shaft is embellished with a gilded spiraling band that is topped with a sphere bisected with a disk. It rests on a base with four coiled and pleated feet that are connected to the central shaft with small cylinders. Light traces of use. Gilbert Poillerat (1902-1988) was trained at the École Boulle, where he discovered metalwork. After receiving his degree in 1921, he entered the workshop of Edgar Brandt, an important French manufacturer of metal building supports. He worked for Brandt for six years and then worked for Baudet, Donon, and Roussel, an important elevator and metallic construction company. Beginning in 1928, he began presenting his work under his own name. Profoundly classical in nature and respectful of the Old Masters, his taste tended toward shapes from the Grand Siècle. This period was characterized by the progressive abandonment of the worship of right angles for curves and convolutions, which clearly suited him. Beginning in 1935, he received prestigious orders, such as the one for the Palais de Chaillot, the entrance gate of the National Library, or the lighting for the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. The young metalworker at times separated from the monumental in order to apply his multiple talents to several objects: andirons, lamps, small interior screens, or figurines that hearkened back to the work of metalworkers from yesteryear. At the end of the 1930s Gilbert Poillerat had already made his name as the premier metalworker of his generation.
