Antique Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Temple Lantern Light

About the Item

A beautiful antique Japanese Meiji Period bronze temple lantern light. Circa 1890. Delivery is Included for all areas in Mainland UK via a selected parcel company. Converted to electric, re-wired and PAT tested, a plug has been added to show it in working order. The lantern has had a repair to the door, having part of the frame remade and this foliage panel is partly missing. Please refer to the photographs. Verdigris patination with age. The chain length is 45cm, the length of the cable is 130cm.

    Bronze vase by Nakajima Yasumi II (1905-1986), Showa period, Circa 1960-70. Patinated dark reddish brown, the vase has a slender waisted shape. The base cast with a seal-style signature, along with the inscribed Tomobako (Paulownia) wood storage box. In good condition, the vase shows some rubbing with handling and there is a small area of very minor marks. Please refer to the last photograph. The storage box is in very good condition. Born in Osaka, the eldest son of the well-known metal artist Nakajima Yasumi I, Yasumi II graduated from the Sendai National Crafting Academy in 1932. In 1933 he exhibited for the first time at the Export Crafts Exhibition, and went on to show his work several times outside Japan at the Grande Salon de Paris...

    An elegant pair of Japanese cast and lacquered bronze pagoda lanterns, Taisho Period, circa 1920, Japan. The lanterns a true pair, with mirrored decorations and lantern doors opening in opposite directions. The lanterns of traditional toro form, cast in bronze, and lacquered. Each lantern comprised of three parts - the "roof", the "fire box", and the pedestal. This type of pedestal lantern is called a dai-doro, as opposed to the hanging lantern type, tsuri-doro. The hexagonal roof of the lantern, reminiscent of temples or pagodas, features a wonderful, dense cloud pattern with three heart-shaped cutouts, known as inome, or boar's eye. The roof topped by a hoju, the Buddhist flaming Jewel of Wisdom. Each of the six corners feature a fantastic shachihoko, mythical beasts with the face of a tiger and body of a fish. Bells are suspended from the shachihoko. The globular body of the lantern features four pierced panels with the three leaf hollyhock mon of the Tokugawa clan surrounded by a karakusa pattern of scrolling vines.
