About the Item

Beautiful pair of cast bronze original Handel sconces, with HANDEL stamp (see photos below), in pristine condition. Each sconce is hammered but feel is softer than you would expect. Brass orbs are used as hardware elements, holding the mounting bracket and for the shade fitter screws. Paddle switches are on each of the sockets. The slag glass is full of movement between the cream and caramel colors. The orb detail is used again on the shades capping each of the vertical seems. Boasting an illustrious lifespan of nearly half a century, the Handel Lamp Company was one of the early 20th century's premier lighting companies. They were best known for their reverse-painted lamp shades, which were produced from 1906 until the 1920s, when Art Nouveau began to wane in popularity. These highly collectible pieces were marketed to upper-middle class families, and offered interchangeable shades and bases to suit the owner's preferences. Unfortunately, the company closed in 1936, two decades after the death of Philip Handel.
