Opal Glass Seashell Wall Lamp by Glashütte Limburg, Germany, 1970s
About the Item
This Glashütte Limburg wall light or sconce is a playful example of the rebellion against the simple minimalism of the mid-century modern style. Early 1970s design accelerated the emergence of bold personal expression with an explosion of new shapes and textures permeating households. As hard as it may be to imagine, the main feature of this model is its material, not its shape. It is made of high-quality, mouth-blown glass, in which a wafer-thin layer of opal glass is enclosed between two layers of crystal glass so that the light is distributed evenly and pleasantly throughout the room. The main purpose of the whimsical shell design is to highlight the beauty of the three-layer opal glass. “Sand is one of the most valuable raw materials in the production of glass – and perhaps that is why we feel a special bond with the shell,” says their catalog. The satin finish of the hand-blown glass glows beautifully when the light is on, creating an atmospheric atmosphere while highlighting the sculpted shell shape. In addition to its aesthetic benefits, opaline glass has many great properties. It is characterized by its elegance, resistance and practicality and has therefore been present since the 16th century. As a wall light, the lamp is located close to the wall and is connected to it via a white enamelled metal back plate. Glashütte Limburg is a real manufactory that has focused on impeccable craftsmanship over the past decades. While the designer of this model is unknown, many of the company's lamps were designed by the Glashütte Limburg design department or the Glashütte Limburg studio. The Fixture requires an European E27 / 110 Volt Edison bulb, up to 75 watts. A nice addition to any room. Found at an Estate Sale in Nuremberg, Germany.
