About the Item

A pair of early 20th century brass wall lights with frosted cut glass cabouchon shades. Attributed to Gustave Serrurier-Bovy. Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (1858-1910) was one of the leading decorators bridging Arts and Craft and Art Nouveau in Belgium. After reading architecture at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Liege, Serrurier –Bovy travelled to England in the early 1880s. There, he discovered William Morris and the Arts and Craft movement, as well as the new emporium for modern and eclectic design, Liberty. Serrurier-Bovy returned to Liege with these new inspirations, and set up shop in 1884, selling English antiques and imported Japanese artefacts. Serrurier-Bovy was still infatuated with his English experience when Art Nouveau’s passion for nature became the height of fashion in Belgium and in France in the 1890s. He was teaching Applied Arts at the Academy in Antwerp, and exhibiting his own Arts and Craft designs at fairs including the “Salon de la Libre Aesthetique” in Brussels in 1893, the “Arts and Crafts” exhibition in London and at the “Salon du Champ de Mars” in Paris in 1896. Critics in Paris severely judged his humble pieces of cabinet making, deeming them to be without style or elegance. Serrurier-Bovy persevered, and in 1900 he opened his own workshops in Liege and a shop in Paris. 1901 marked the beginning of recognition for Serrurier-Bovy, when he successfully merged art nouveau curves with the austere, yet dramatic lines of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Serrurier-Bovy spent the following decade creating new collections for his shop and decorating houses for patrons like Don Luis de Ortiz Basualdo in Argentina. The great architect, Victor Horta, often recommended Serrurier-Bovy to his clients for furnishings. The wall-lights are a perfect example of Serrurier-Bovy’s acclaimed fusion of styles, with the arcs at the base drawn from Art Nouveau architecture, and the tall lines of Mackintosh above the glass cabochon lights. The wall-lights were most likely designed shortly after the Liszt range (1903-1904), which Serrurier-Bovy created for his private Villa l’Aube, now one of the landmarks of Art Nouveau architecture in Liege. The Liszt range introduced a new pattern of three parallel lines, which Serrurier-Bovy continued using in a series of brass furniture in 1907. Serrurier-Bovy died of exhaustion in 1910 after exhibiting at the “Exposition de Bruxelles”, which marked the end of the Art Nouveau movement. The business slowly carried on until the war, only to be closed in 1918.
