1970's Chrome Robot Lamp by Torino Lamps
About the Item
Highly desirable chrome robot standing lamp by Torino Lamps, 1978.
Often believed to be of Italian origin this robot and other character lamps were designed and produced in Florida by Atrio Consolidated Industries, Inc. dba Torino Lamps and Tables.
The company was founded in the late 1960's by two brothers, George and Andy Atrio, Cuban exiles working out of their Miami garage. By 1979 the company had revenues of $3.5 million but were driven out of business in 1981 when their bank lenders demanded early repayment. In 1985 a jury decided the bank acted unlawfully and ordered them to pay the Atrio brothers $3 million in compensation and $9 million in punitive damages.
28 inches tall including the half chrome large globe lightbulb domed head and 13 inches wide inclusive of the half chrome E27 lightbulb hands, standing on an 11 inches diameter base. White and clear lightbulbs can also be used.
The light switch is actually the nose. Turn once to illuminate head, eyes and hands, twice for head and eyes only, thrice for hands only and once again for off.
The chrome is clean and bright without blemish everywhere except for the base itself which shows some oxidation to the chrome electroplating.
The arms and the upper torso can be moved to lean forward and backwards up to approximately 20 degrees.
The dangling hoop earrings suggest this character may have been intended to represent the female of her species however the earrings are easily removed if a more masculine or non-binary identity is preferred.
