1972 Gruppo Arditi Set of 2 Table Steel Lamps, Movable Lights, by Sormani, Italy

About the Item

This avantgarde lamps, duly certified by the Producer, were manufactured by Sormani Nucleo in 1972. The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston is displaying this masterpiece of the Space Age during the exhibition "Radical: Italian Design 1965–1985, The Dennis Freedman Collection February 14, 2020 — April 26, 2020". These lamps belong to the private collection of the manufacturer's family. They have a polished steel prismic base, with six Lucite lighting elements that can be moved in different positions on the cube by means of magnets. This was a patent of Duccio Trassinelli of Gruppo A.R.D.I.T.I. a radical group of designers that was forty years in advance in conceiving light as a sculptural element, just like it happens today with Oled technology. Luigi Sormani was eager to manufacture such an advanced concept in his Nucleo Division. The lamps are in very good conditions and bear the original Nucleo labels. Cable and internal electrical equipment have been restored. The lamps come with a "Certificate of Authenticity" issued on original vintage letterhead of the manufacturer.

  • Richard Sapper ‘Tizio’ Table Lamp Artemide, Italy, 1972
    By Artemide, Richard Sapper
    Located in London, GB
Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. It has become “an icon of high-tech design”, according to the MoMA where an example exhibited, and had its heyday as the lamp of choice for the design-conscious bright young things...
