Art Deco Camel Lamp Ca. 1925

Those King Tut or Egyptian-obsessed of you will adore this camel lamp. Or, perhaps you just like the smelly, noisy and cantankerous beasts themselves.

This one started life as an inkwell. During the Tutomania years a huge desk set was created and sold -- there were about 15-20 pieces altogether, and no stone was left unturned. But the inkwell lept away from the other pieces in terms of its dimensionality and animated design. I'm to blame for the transition from inkwell to lamp, and such a fine job I've done if I do say so myself. The shade of course comes from that venerable tradition of mica-lined candle-lamp lampshades, and the fitter is unique to that design. This shade is particularly unusual with its pierced brass design, reminding us of the all-brass lamps and shades that were made in Syrian around 1910 for the American and European markets. Note the cloud-like gathering of material around the bottom of the shades, where the beads begin. Sooooo mysterious and fantastical! Yes, I could spend an hour touching up the paint on His Majesty, but frankly I rather enjoy the "I've been around" look that he sports, a True Antique!
