Astounding Architectural Form Lamp in the Style of Gianfranco Fini, Italy

About the Item

Truly majestic and beautiful Italian, architectural form, cityscape, lamp of a very impressive scale 35.8" (91cm) tall X 27.75 " (70.5) wide X 9.45" (24cm) deep. Given its scale the lamp can be used equally as a very impressive scale table lamp or a low level floor lamp. Please see image 3 to get a sense of scale when set against a lounge chair. The detailing and original internal electrics including the original switch etc. date the lamp to the 1968-1973 period. Furthermore the construction detailing is very reminiscent of the lamps created by Gianfranco Fini for the cult avant garde lighting company 'new lamp,' who produced in very limited numbers, some of the most beautiful examples of lighting of the entire late 1960s to early 1970s period. This lamp shares many common details in form and materials with both the 'Ascissa' and 'Momo' lamps created by 'new lamp'. The lamps sculptural form is made up of a series of interconnecting aluminum columns of varying, square and rectangular cross sections and lengths. Each column is finished at each end with a brushed transparent plexiglass diffuser which has an integral cooling slot cut into its lower surface which allows the hot air created by the light bulbs to escape, a detail found on both Fini's 'ascissa' lamp and Mario Vento's 'Momo' lamp, both of which also use square section aluminum columns with plexiglass diffusers at each end and both created for the Roman avant garde lighting company 'new lamp'. Each column contains two incandescent, Edison screw, light bulbs, one near each end, an uplighter and a downlighter; the unusual bespoke metal floor switch has two separate switches so you can independently switch the uplighters and downlighters on and off to create different levels of lighting mood as desired. This is clearly an extremely rare design and one I have never come across before, I bought it in Italy and have showed it to one of the world foremost expert's on Italian lighting of this period, Fulvio Ferrari and he told me he had also not come across this lamp before but was sure it was something special and from the construction and detailing was clearly of high quality, possibly a one off architect production for a private commission. All the bulb holders are original and date from the late 1960s to early 1970s period, they all work as does the foot switch. The switch is also clearly original to the lamp, probably bespoke and of the correct period. The lamp sits on a series of rosewood block feet which are still in very good order. The aluminum columns exhibit original surface patination and a few surface scratches commensurate with age and use, no attempt has been made to polish them in order to maintain the authenticity but can be polished if required. The plexiglass diffusers are still in excellent order with no signs of heat distortion and no cracks so the cooling slots in the diffusers have definitely been doing their job well. This lamp would make an impressive and sophisticated presence in any interior. A rare opportunity.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Lovely all original condition, the aluminum has natural patina which can be polished, a few surface scratches commensurate with originality,age and use. All plexiglass diffusers are all in excellent order with no heat distortion or cracks.
