About the Item

Rare midcentury ceramic table lamp by Carli Bauer from the 1950s. It is a unique piece of Carli Bauer's oriental series, which depicts a goldfish, unlike the known figurative figures. A turquoise-beige fish built on a black base, with a lamp placed in its pastel yellow mouth. Its lampshade is original. Silk or satin veil interspersed with oriental plants. Bauer's ceramics from this period were born from the world of Far Eastern atmosphere and motifs, which were produced in Austria by Gmundner Keramik. The lamp is in beautiful condition for its age. The hood is worn in places, but not disturbing. Marked piece. The goldfish is also a popular subject in art and is a common motif in both Chinese and Japanese art. It appears on porcelain and ceramic dishes as well as on textiles such as embroidery, wood carvings, or decorative elements of architecture. The composition jingyu, meaning goldfish, sounds similar to "gold and abundance" (jing yu), which is why it is considered a very popular gift. Carl Bauer (1894-1960) He was born on December 10, 1894. in Passau-Rosenau, where he studied woodcarving. He passed his master's exam in pottery and ceramics. 1924 – 1945 He worked as a retoucher at the Wiener Porzellanfabrik Augarten. From 1928, he was a senior retoucher and head of the figure department. In 1949, he worked for the widow of the Viennese ceramic artist Herrmann Heinl. In 1955, Bauer rented Gretl Braun's studio in Vienna's 4th district, Victorgasse 18. Here he developed further models of oriental figures. During this time, he employed between seven and twelve people in his workshop. These Bauer ceramics were exported to Australia, Great Britain, Bermuda, Sweden, and Los Angeles. In 1958, he fell ill with silicosis, an occupational disease of ceramicists. and finally died in 1960. In our studio, we collect exciting pieces, mainly from the European period of the 1930s-1970s. We love bohemian and special pieces. We refurbish the furniture, always using classic craft techniques. During the renovation, we choose a textile from which we make only one piece.
