About the Item

Hand-thrown ceramic on a walnut base table lamp by potter Bob Kinzie for Affiliated Crafstmen, circa 1960s. Bob Kinzie is one of the most amazing throwers. In the early 1960's, he and two friends established a pottery manufacturing business called Affiliated Craftsmen, California. It was first located in Los Angeles, but shortly thereafter relocated to Costa Mesa, California. They produced primarily large textured lamp bases and garden pots. The trio decided to follow the Japanese Mengei tradition of "the unknown craftsman" and therefore did not mark or sign their names to the work (this later changed after Kinzie left the company in the early 70's--pieces were then sometimes marked with paper labels and a stamp mark). During the Affiliated Craftsmen period in the 1960's Bob also produced large lamp bases for Raul Coronel's company Stoneware Designs, Inc.; some of these were apparently sold by Coronel to the Architectural Pottery Company which has caused some confusion among both collectors and dealers of Mid Century Modern pottery: The Affiliated Craftsmen/Stoneware Designs output is often mistaken for or misrepresented as the work of another artist: David Cressey, best known for his work with Architectural Pottery Company, and later with Earthgender, a partnership with his friend Robert Maxwell.

"Basket Weave" Table Lamp Attr. to Paul Laszlo
By Paul Laszlo
Located in Pasadena, CA
Visionary Paul Laszlo designed this mid-century table lamp for Brown Saltman during the 1950s in the United States. It has a wood body adorned with Laszlo's chest pattern, reminiscent of his famed "Basket Weave" furniture line. Geometry and volumes take center stage with its rectangular structure for the foot and base and tube-shaped shade. Paul Laszlo (1900-1993) was a Hungarian-born American interior designer known for his luxurious and influential work during the mid-20th century. He became a prominent figure in Hollywood's Golden Age, designing elegant interiors for celebrities, wealthy clients, and prominent institutions. Laszlo studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1927, he moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after designer. His work embodied the glamour and sophistication of the era, combining modernist principles with opulent materials and impeccable craftsmanship. Laszlo's clientele included Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, and Barbara Stanwyck. Laszlo's designs often featured custom furniture, vibrant colors, rich textures, and a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements. Throughout his career, Laszlo worked on various projects ranging from private residences to hotels, clubs, and corporate spaces. His notable works include the interiors of the iconic Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, as well as the renowned Brown Derby restaurant.
