Lauritz Adolph Hjorth Glazed Ceramic Table Lamp

About the Item

Unusual table lamp made by the Danish ceramist Lauritz Adolph Hjorth, this black glazed ceramic table lamp features several nocturnal animals. Signed at the bottom. Lauritz Adolph Hjorth (1831-1912) is a Danish ceramist who’s works are highly sought. Early in his career Lauritz Adolph Hjorth created utilitarian items, including water-coolers, flowerpots, and milk-jugs. In 1862 he began concentrating on decorative vases and figurines that referred in style and ornamentation to antique and old Norse designs, he also decorated his pieces with floral and animal elements characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Hjorth's terracotta was abundantly represented at world exhibitions, and his work was widely distributed and popular internationally. Around 1900 his production included Jugendstil vases, many of which were made of black-burned terracotta. Lauritz Adolph Hjorth firm's production was strongly inspired by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen whose statuettes it manufactured.
