Pair of Italian 19th Century Neoclassical St. Lamps
About the Item
A handsome and large scale pair of Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. patinated bronze, ormolu and faux painted Porphyry lamps. Each lamp is raised by elegant ormolu ball feet below the wonderfully executed square faux painted Porphyry base. At the center are richly chased beautiful patinated bronze caryatids dressed in classical attire. They each hold their gown in one hand and have their hair tied in a charming and detailed braid. Above is a scrolled ormolu crowned entablature support below the gold silk pleated shade. Wonderful proportions and handsome architectural feel throughout. All original patina and gilt. A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literaly means "maidens of Karyai".
