Poul Henningsen “PH-5” Table Lamp for Louis Poulsen, Denmark, 1960s

About the Item

This “PH-5” table lamp from the Danish “Master of Soft Light”, Poul Henningsen, is one of the designer’s most popular models, and is considered to be an icon of Scandinavian modern lighting design. Perhaps the most recognizable of all the Poul Henningsen lights, the PH-5 gets its name from the 50 cm diameter of its top shade. The model was designed in 1958 and showcased at the 'Glass, Light and Colours' exhibition in the Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen. The multi-shade construction was a speciality of Henningsen and made his designs famous world-wide. This particular lamp features three conical layers with matt undersides that direct the light downwards and prevent any glare. The white lacquered metal shades are supported by the three-part frame and base of patinated brass. The elegant, distinctive design is taken even further by the playful addition of the red and blue reflectors on top, that provide the light with a warm quality, which brings a softer ambience to rooms. The shade is made from spun aluminium bringing a touch of Scandinavian style to any space. This lamp was manufactured by Louis Poulsen, the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer, founded in 1874. Henningsen began working together with Louis Poulsen in 1924, with a view to taking part in an international exhibition for decorative art to be held in Paris. A competition was held to find qualified participants: Henningsen was one of the winners and his “PH” lamps earned Gold medals in this exhibition. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Brass top with small dents and dimples. Minor lacquer peeling and discolouration. Overall, the item has a beautiful patina. Dimensions: 18.89 in W x 24.01 in H 48 cm ? x 61 cm H Literature: “Tænd” page 283. About the designer: Poul Henningsen was born in 1894 in Copenhagen to the famous Danish author Agnes Henningsen. In Denmark, where he is often simply referred to as PH, he was one of the leading figures of the cultural life of Denmark between the World Wars. Between 1911 and 1917, he was trained at Copenhagen Technical College and the Technical University of Denmark, where he studied to be an architect, but never graduated, choosing instead to follow a career as an inventor and painter. He started out working in traditional Functionalist architecture, but over time his professional interests shifted to lighting – the field in which he became famous. In addition to his design work he started to write and later became a journalist and author. For a short period at the beginning of the Second World War he worked as an architect at Tivoli in Copenhagen. Like so many other creative people he fled from Denmark during the German occupation of the country. Living in exile, he quickly became a vital part of the Danish colony of architects living in Sweden. Poul Henningsen – or PH – designed the world-renowned PH lamp series, the Artichoke, the PH80, the PH-5 and the Snowball for Louis Poulsen. Henningsen’s lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and continued until his death in 1967, and Louis Poulsen still enjoys the benefits of his genius today. Henningsen was also the first editor of Louis Poulsen Lighting’s magazine “NYT”. Poul Henningsen’s pioneering work on lighting theory – structure, shadow, glare and colour reproduction in relation to the human need for light – is still in use today at Louis Poulsen Lighting. His novel works of Danish modern designs are featured in many museums. ~H. • Einar Johansen Stoneware Table Lamp for Søholm Stentøj Bornholm, Denmark 1960s
    By Einar Johansen
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This handmade 1960s table lamp was designed by the brilliant Danish artist, Einar Johansen, and produced by Søholm Stentøj (Søholm stoneware). The manufactory was one of the oldest and most revered names in Danish ceramics. It was founded in Rønne on the Baltic island of Bornholm in 1835, and produced ceramics until the factory closed in 1996. Johansen originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and that truly shows in his ceramic work as well. This table lamp has a beautiful ceramic body featuring a beautiful ceramic glaze in shades of white, brown, and blue, and a clear artistic touch. Two opposing sides feature a sculptural motif shaped like five fluted steps leading up to the neck. These showcase the colour variation and play of the glazed clay and provide plenty of visual interest. The flared neck has gently rounded edges, providing the perfect support for the shade. The classic bell shape of the shade is covered by a light fabric with trims that match the colour scheme of the glaze. The overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that is inspired by nature. This table lamp has a particularly lovely glaze, thick, deep, and full of colour nuances enhanced by the sculptural decorations. In the middle of the 20th century, Søholm produced a wide range of stoneware in various patterns and shapes. During that time, Einar Johansen was employed at the manufactory, and designed and created a wide range of stoneware, where his "blue series" is the most highly sought after by collectors today. Condition: In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The lamp has a newly produced shade. Dimensions: 13.77 in Ø x 25.19 in H 35 cm Ø x 64 cm H About the designer/manufacturer: Søholm was founded by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen in 1835. Herman Sonne Wolffsen ran the pottery until his death in 1887. Much of the production was then unsigned. The pottery was operated by Hans Ancher Wolffsen and his brother in 1887-1908 They adopted the popular Jugendstil with its often grotesque shapes. The raw material for the ceramics, clay, was found just outside the city limits and was of very high quality. The large clay pits provided material for many potters, faïence and terracotta factories as well as ceramists. Danish designer, Einar Johansen, was employed at Søholm in the period between 1958-1968, and designed several, beautiful stoneware and pottery, including his famous blue glazed stoneware. Johansen, created many wonderful designs for Søholm Stentøj as well as in his own studio. He originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but changed his mind and became a ceramicist. The classic Bornholm ceramics...

  • Stilnovo Accent Table Lamp, Italy, 1960s
    By Stilnovo
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This characteristic Stilnovo table lamp is the definition of an eye-catching design. Decorative lighting is basically the fourth layer of illumination, the jewellery of the room. This lamp contains the comfort of ambiance lighting, the efficiency of task lighting, and the impact of accent lighting. Accent lamps are generally smaller lights that give a dark corner a nice glow. In this design lamp’s case however, the look is just as appealing when turned off, which can be considered a Stilnovo speciality. The copper structure is layered, starting from the bottom with a round black lacquered base. The thin, nickel-plated metal tube rests on a smaller round base and supports the drum-shaped middle section that serves as the diffuser. As such, it is made of thinner, tinted methacrylate that dims the light to create atmospheric, stylish lighting. The shade has small holes on its top that lets the light through for an appealing effect. The design is topped off with the thin metal tube piercing through the shade visually, ending in a small sphere as a focal point. The tricolour palette and combination of materials sets the design tone, creating an aesthetic that is reminiscent not only of the space age, but also of industrial design. This lamp is truly original and seems to find its origins in Europe. On a side table or a sideboard, this Stilnovo table lamp will quickly find its marks in any interior. To accompany the stylish look, the copper has beautiful patina that adds vintage charm to the otherwise modern aesthetic of the design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The metal has a beautiful patina with some marks. Dimensions: 6.88 in Ø x 13.38 in H 17.5 cm Ø x 34 cm H About the manufacturer: Stilnovo was founded in the heart of Milan by Bruno Gatta in 1946. In 1947, Stilnovo participated in the 8th Triennale di Milano and immediately activated a communications campaign, focused on the most important specialized magazines in the sector. In the following years, Bruno Gatta partnered with his brother Paolo, who had recently graduated from university and in September 1949, they opened “Stilnovo Srl”, with a share capital of 400,000 Italian Lire. This set off a managerial pathway which, over the course of just a few years, saw the company become a point of reference in modern lighting. By 1956, Stilnovo achieved a share capital of 4,000,000 Italian Lire, a tenfold increase in just seven years. Their designs were celebrated and the “2061” model became the first Stilnovo lamp selected at the Compasso d’Oro. In 1957, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed two Saliscendi light fixtures for the new Milan Chamber of Commerce. The coming decades brought many designs that are now considered iconic, and by the 1970s, many of their models were featured in various media outlets, galleries, and museums. Stilnovo took part in the 1972 show “Italy, the New Domestic Landscape” at the MoMA in New York, where the Periscopio and Nuvola lamps...

Pouls Henningsen PH 3½-2½ Table Lamp. Denmark, designed 1928, new, current production. PH 3 ½-2 ½ Table was designed in 1928 and is one of many development projects undertaken by PH in connection with the development of his world-famous three-shade system. The table lamp is based on PH's original drawings, and comes with the first type of shade holder, with adjustment screws. The top metal shade has a rolled edge, a decorative and stabilising feature that makes the shade appear thicker than the actual material. The two bottom shades are made of mouth-blown opal glass. PH found that this combination utilises the light source more efficiently, directing the light downwards due to the reflection from the white inner surface of the top shade. The frame is brown painted brass giving the lamp the same appearance as the burnished brass lamps of the time – a process that is no longer recommended due to environmental considerations. Material: Top shade: Spun aluminium painted in yellow with a white rolled edge. The inside of the top shade is white. Middle and lower shade are mouth-blown glass. Shade holder: Silk matt...
