Rare Pair of Maija Heikinheimo Table Lamps Model MH705, Valaistustyö 1960s

About the Item

This pair of lamps you will not easliy find again, for it is extremely rare. Maija Heikinheimo (1908-1963) was an interior architect that started her career at Asko in 1932-1935. Later she joined the Artek team, and was Alvar Aalto´s right hand, especially after Aino Aalto´s sudden death due to illness. Maija was the general manager for Artek from 1945-1955. Maija designed furnitures, light fixtures and some dishes and smaller objects as well. Maija was awarded the Pro-Finlandia medal in 1959. Maija was a very talented designer, and yet she prefered to stay in the background. She stayed at Artek for the rest of her working career until she suddenly fell ill and passed away at the young age of 55 in 1963. Maija made a point of dedicating all drawings at the Artek offices to Alvar Aalto, although a lot of them were done by her or other talented architects or designers. She simply erassed the other names and replaced them with Alvar´s name. She was meticulous about this issue. As with other similar lamp models from that era, the combination of cold brass and warm rattan is just irresistably nice in interior design. That explains the endless demand on these vintage lamps.

Rewired: It seems as the wiring was renewed at some point. The overall impression is good. Wear consistent with age and use. Beautiful vintage condition.
