Rare Porcelain Advertising Ware Table Lamp, Baltimore, circa 1840s

About the Item

A rare porcelain bottle (circa 1840-1850) hand painted with images of stock (jugs, pitchers, tureens and whale oil lamps) sold by the C. Levering Co. of Baltimore, and mounted as a table lamp itself sometime in the 1970s. Specimen wares were used as window advertising by store owners in the 18th and 19th century, but it’s fairly unusual to find them specific to a particular vendor. Clinton Levering of Lombard Street, imported fine pottery, glass and the popular Queen’s ware of the Staffordshire region by way of Baltimore’s newly designed fast clipper ships during the first half of the 19th century and his ownership pre-dated the later Levering Brothers incorporation of 1852. The only other such known example of the advertising of this firm is in the collection of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. Measures 22" to top of socket, 33" high to top of finial, 8" diameter. In the final image, this is shown with a shade for perspective only, the shade is not included.
